Taking your emergency contraceptive pill:

Each sexual health kit contains one pill of levonorgestrel emergency contraception. Either Plan B or Cadence. Both can be taken within 72 hours of when:

  • You didn’t use any form of birth control and had unprotected sex

  • There was an issue with your birth control method (e.g., the condom broke or slipped)

  • You missed a dose (or more) of your regular birth control pill and had sex

Emergency Contraception is more effective the sooner you take it.
Not certain if it’s been 72 hours? Try this countdown calculator to be confident.

Hand Holding Pill

Emergency contraception does not impact the effectiveness of any regular birth control methods.

If you take emergency contraception, you can resume your regular birth control right away.

Weigh more than 165 lbs? Has it been more than 72 hours?
A different emergency contraception might be better for you.

Ulipristal acetate (aka ella) is a prescription emergency oral contraceptive pill that can be used within five days of unprotected sex. You can ask your healthcare provider for a prescription to get ella in advance to have on hand just in case.

If you had unprotected sex and need ella now, you can ask for a prescription from your healthcare provider, a family planning clinic, your campus or student health center, an urgent care center, the ER, or a telemedicine provider like NuRx or Wisp.

How to use your Pregmate pregnancy test:

To avoid false negative tests, take a pregnancy test three weeks after taking emergency contraception.

For best results, use first-morning urine if possible and/or reduce liquid intake 2-3 hours before the test.

Emergency contraception is not an abortion pill. It will not end an existing pregnancy.
